Sample Project / Resources
Unregistered says : Hi there
I am currently studying Project Management as part of which
I need to do an assignment on a project.
I would like to base mine on a car rental company implementing a crm product
I have some detail on this and a general idea of how to structure the project plan.
However I would be grateful if anyone has any examples of this type
of project or could suggest any good internet resources for
looking at the various aspects of project planning .
I would be particularly interested in anything that would highlight potential
pitfalls and budget overruns
I hope I've made myself clear
Thanks
Elaine

Yes, perfectly clear. What methodology are you being taught? PMBOK perhaps. The process is fairly straight forward...you must ensure that each step is considered and documented.

Hi Elaine,
what is crm? Is it a programming language?
newbie
Bernard says : CRM = Customer Relationship Management
newbie says :
Bernard>CRM = Customer Relationship Management
Thank you Bernard. But Elaine said a crm "product". So what is a "Customer Relationship Management product" that a car rental company has to rent? I do not understand.

Hi,
Maybe in its simplest form it is a customer database that remembers the birthdays of the customer's children and sends them a card from the car rental company
Is that what you mean Elaine?
Bernard says : CRM software is usually used for a variety of chores such as assisting a sales staff with keeping track of the sales cycle (ie. keeping contact info, notes about sales process, calendar for follow up events, etc.) and maintaining customer loyalty (scheduling notifications, coupons, ads, newsletters, warranty expirations & tracking purchases, etc).

Hey Bernard...that is what I said :D

Thanks. I now understand. It is a product for use inside the company to help keep and maybe get new customers from the older ones. do many companies use these crm products?

Bernard says : Yes. There is a huge market for these systems.

do they write themslelves inhouse?
newbie
salcorp says : Depending on what the company wants its better to write it inhouse. But then acountability comes into the game and its always harder to blame someone from your own company.
If the job is outsorced or even bought from 3rd parties then there is a bigger chance of it being custumed for your needs and you still have someone to spank and sue if its not what you want.
I believe SAP and PeopleSoft have specific modules for that... anyone correct me if I´m wrong.

Hmmm, this sounds interesting. It sounds like "We will not be able to do it ourselves, so lets pick someone that we can blame when they deliver" :) I would have thought that using the prototype/check/change methodology inhouse that you could get EXACTLY what you needed? Am I wrong?
Bernard says :

I was referring to the already available 3rd party market:

This assumes that the company can develop and maintain software cheaper than buying a commercial system! The vast majority of companies that are using CRM systems do not have any involvement with software development.

I´m just saying that not all companies have the capacity/man-power/resolution to develop an in-house project that will actually go through. I´ve seen this happen in a couple of places, when the job is being done for the benefit of who is doing it sometimes project management vision is blurred by the fact that no money will be received in the end of the project. And unfortunetly most PMs are focused on money-based ROI and not quality-based ROI.
And also, not all companies who need PM software are software houses. The biggest projects in the world are the ones that have nothing to do with software. Just take a look at the military and construction branches.

Yuri, I think we slipped off the topic slightly. We were discussing the preparation of CRM software inhouse or externally.
OK, I agree that not all companies have an internal software unit that could or even should write the CRM software. But surely they could work with the developers in a close cycle of specify/prepare/show/amend to get what they need? As for the return on investment, I would have thought that the marketing people who prepared the business case for obtaining a CRM package would have already addressed this issue.
Regards,
