Beginer PM
Sunil says : Hi,
Hi,
I am a newbie in PM arena. I have been involved in SW development for
past 8 years and aware of SDLC pretty well but haven't taken a PM
responsibility before. My organisation do not practice the advance PM
methodology instead planning, estimation, scheduling is based on past
project history and past experiences.
I want to learn the latest PM techniques/methods. I wouldn't get a hands
on these at work, so I need to find a way to atleast make myself well
aquatinted with the new PM trend. I do read few book and article to be in
touch. I am seeking suggestions/guidance from you experienced PM as
how and from where to start learning the "real PM" concepts.
Any pointers will be of great help.
Thanks in advance
bas says : "...instead planning, estimation, scheduling is based on past

Well start out with the software project management tutorial on this site, and google for agile project management, scrum.
Cheers

Robin Jackson says : Project estimation and scheduling based on past metrics is the way to go. Maybe you're not asking the right question, are you thinking about using an AGILE methodology or something? If you're looking for shortcuts, don't. PM might seem tedious but PMBOK combined with IEEE's SDLC are very good. You just need to make sure to scale the PM effort to fit the project.
bas says : :o well robin, thanks... but i dunno about that always right ...
welcome to the board.

drsarbjit says : Well some basics are:
1) Must have domain knowledge to understand thorougly who is customer and what is his/her requirement
2) Examine and be sure of the scope ,constraints ( Time . Cost) and resources avaible
3) Analyse ->Plan ->Monitor -> in-process control ( Not Post action correction) -monitor -> complete ->deliver -> maintain( Post delivery maintenance)
4) Project are team effort of multi disciplinary people pooled for the life of the project.
5) Judicious deployment of available resources
Best of Luck
The fact that you are looking for pointers is a good begining
